HISTORY OF “ MICROPERF ” WATER SAVER LINERS FOR HANGING BASKETS AND ALL OTHER TYPES OF PLANTING CONTAINERS
Trials began in the fall of 1999 and continued until spring of 2003 at which time the assistance of the Provincial arm of Government BC (Science and Technology) provided funds to Malaspina College (Now Vancouver Island University) to trial my idea in conjunction with the City of Nanaimo’s moss type hanging baskets, which suffer heavy losses of water and nutrients. Due to the success of my invention “ Microperf “ liners have been in use in cities since 2003 on Vancouver Island and other cities and towns across Canada including many garden centres. In 2016 came a rebranding of the overall company with the parent company now being named WaterSmart Solutions and it’s manufactured product is now known as “Watersmart™ liner hanging basket liners.
Why the success of my invention you ask? The standard watering sequences for hanging baskets and all similar containers is once a day in the low 60’s to low 70’s. With the liner, you water once every 3 to 4 days (Depending on full sun or shade conditions). Temperatures in the high 70’s and upwards to the 100’s need watering 2 times a day without the liner. With the liner, the watering sequence is only done once every 2 days. Savings are attained not only in water and nutrients but labour as well. The secret of Watersmartliner™ is the liner allows oxygen to enter the liner while keeping the water and nutrients held in suspension without causing any root rot to the plant’s rooting system.
The cost of the liner is minimal, yet it will save cities, towns and the public many litres of water including labor and fuel costs. An example being the Town of Qualicum Beach who saves a couple of hours a day alone (man, watering truck). This allows parks personnel to be utilized in other phases of parks maintenance. From a home owners point of view watering can be completed on a Friday evening with confidence that when they return Sunday their baskets will be healthy and not dried out. In brief, less time is spent watering. When a basket begins to drip, you move on to the next one. This practice applies to all baskets and other containers including moss and coir lined baskets as well.
Watersmartliner™ is a proven product that works and will save our nation millions of litres of water per year. It is important that we conserve our water resources.
